CONSERVATION CHARITY SHOWs HOW GARDENING CAN IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING

The Conservation Volunteers were in the gardens of the Niamh Louise Foundation this week carrying out general maintenance and planting to show how exercise can play a role in improving mental health and wellbeing.

The Conservation Volunteers will be carrying out general maintenance and planting in the Niamh Louise Foundation gardens to create a more positive outdoor environment for those affected by suicide to share together. With research showing that being more physically active can reduce rates of depression and anxiety, the gardens will provide an opportunity for those affected by suicide to be outdoors and get involved with gentle exercise.

Emma Duffy from The Niamh Louise Foundation commented ‘The finished garden will help vulnerable people and those at risk of suicide and or self harm de escalate their thoughts. A safe and tranquil place will enable them to find solace and healing.’

Known as Green Gym, The Conservation Volunteers run projects similar to this all over the province. Anyone can get involved in a Green Gym project which offers an alternative to traditional exercise and provides an opportunity to be in the outdoors, meet new people and help maintain a healthier lifestyle.
